To complete your speech assignment, follow steps 1-5 below.

Read ALL the instructions CAREFULLY.

STEPS 1-3 of Speech Assignment

You may use any of the library databases to find background information about your individual, but you MUST use The New York Times as one of your sources.

STEP 4 - Watch the Video - How to Search the NY Times

Examples of how to search for:

  • Obituary (death notice with biographical info) - Eleanor Roosevelt obituary
  • Text and reporting on a speech  -- Madeleine Albright's 1997 Commencement Speech at Harvard

 

STEP 5 - Create a Works Cited

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.

EMAIL your Works Cited page --

  • in a Word document
  • to Ms. Burke at elizabeth.burke@visi.org
  • In the Subject Line, include Your Name, "Speech," Day of Cycle of your class, Section
  • Example:  Elizabeth Burke, Speech, Day 7, A section

YOUR WORKS CITED SHOULD INCLUDE:

  • Citation of an article from The New York Times
  • Times New Roman font - 12
  • Heading with Your Name, Teacher's Name, Name of Course, Day of Cycle it meets, Section, and the Date (example is below (without bullet points in Works Cited)
    • Elizabeth Burke
    • Mrs. Singleton
    • Speech, Day 1, Section B
    • 1 April 2020
  • Works Cited centered
  • Hanging indentation
  • Correct use of quotation marks and italicization
  • URL in black font and underlining removed
  • Correct use of punctuation
  • Correct use of capital letters
  • Correct order within citation
  • Accurate and complete citation
